Maria was utterly shocked by my suggestion to visit the church. During the years Maria and I had been together, we had seldom talked about God. There had been one particular occasion one year when Maria had suggested it would be nice to attend a Christmas service, to which I had responded with such hostility that she never mentioned the idea again.

We visited Marci’s church for two consecutive weeks. It felt good to be in a sacred space to thank God for what He had done for my family. Having shown my gratitude, I had no plans to go back the third week. However, Marci contacted us to say that they were visiting another church in Watford the following Sunday, and asking if we wanted to tag along. Not wishing to appear rude, I agreed. So we turned up at Soul Survivor, which was part of the Church of England, but not the typical kind of church. It was based in an industrial estate and operated out of a warehouse. As we entered this unusual church building, I instantly felt a presence. I later listened with interest to the sermon and the contemporary Christian songs. I liked it so much that to my surprise I decided I wanted to go back again.

Over the coming Sundays I was moved by the passion and elation of the vibrant congregation as they worshipped God. As I eagerly observed the joyous expressions of those around me, I began to grow in the awareness that God was not only real but intimate. And before I knew it, I had opened my mouth and joined in the singing. As I started singing songs of worship something started to stir within me. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I knew I was encountering something. The feeling was like the one I had had at Cavina – a sense of something greater, grander. At Cavina I had felt alive, and here once again I was experiencing a similar sensation. It felt like God was meeting with me as I offered songs of praise.

In all my time at Soul Survivor I never felt I was preached at. No one tried to convince me to believe in anything. I came because in that place I found peace and joy. And how was I to know that one evening I would proceed to walk to the front of the room when the congregation was asked if anyone would like to give their life to Jesus? And how was I to know that as I knelt down and two men prayed for me, that the last thirty-six years of my life would whiz past me in a millisecond, and as I would open my eyes, tears would be streaming down my face as I experienced the overwhelming love of God wash over me? In that single moment my world and my life completely changed. I recall opening my eyes and noticing everything looked different. I was seeing the world with new eyes.
